Do people really get their panties in a rustle over these cuts?

I can't imagine paying more than $180 for a 660. I believe it's been lower than that more than once.

Admittedly, this cut may push sale prices down further. That's always welcome.
  • Stimpack - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

Yeah, I bought a 660 for $180 about 7 months ago. You can take a look at the history here: https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-02gp...

It feels like the MSRP has basically been $180 for most of this year. The fact that the 760 and 770 aren't being cut shows how "serious" Nvidia is with these "price cuts".
  • chizow - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

Yeah 660 has been selling for $180 for some time, as low as $160 I believe a few times, but this will just mean you can get them for maybe $20 cheaper AR.
  • Muyoso - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

Seriously no 670 price cut? Ugh.
  • xTRICKYxx - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

I believe the GTX 670 is officially replaced by the GTX 760.
  • JlHADJOE - Thursday, October 17, 2013 - link

IMO 670 is replaced by the 770. They occupy the exact same number affix and price point. The newer model being fully enabled+faster is Nvidia's way of advancing the 700 series from the 600 series.

Pity that they priced the 780 so high. It should really have come at the 680's old price point.
  • chizow - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

670 seems like it is just going to EOL at around that $300-$350 MSRP mark with some sales in the $220-$250 range. I picked up a Galaxy 670 GC (680PCB) for $230 shipped AR a few weeks ago and I've seen a few other custom models from Asus go for $250. Keep an eye out, but it seems prices have gone up recently, if anything.

Your move AMD. 290X for $599?
  • Someguyperson - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

I kinda think that a strong 290X for ~$600 will push the 780 down to $550 which would push the 770 down to $350 and that's about it. As much as I would like it, I don't think the $250-$350 range isn't going to see a ton of change when AMD drops it's new chips.
  • chizow - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

Latest rumors on 290X pricing indicate it may just slot in between the 780 and Titan at $700-$730. If that's the case we might not see any movement on pricing, which would make sense if Nvidia plans to stand pat on 760/770 pricing.
  • zeock9 - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

What you saw was pre-order price of a BF4 bundle at $730 @Newegg, which includes a special edition copy of BF4, itself about ~$100, in addition to some premium for guaranteed card availability on its launch day.

AMD, if they hadn't lost their minds, can't go above GTX 780's price point with a product that isn't a clear winner over it.

  • DanNeely - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

The 280 coming within a hair of matching the 770's performance for a hundred less is going to force the latter's price down substantially no matter what nVidia originally wanted.
  • Topinio - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

Pathetic. I do want new Nvidia cards to replace my older SLI ones, but the pricing on the 780 is silly.
  • jasonelmore - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

nah its a expensive chip to make, just as expensive to make as titan. the bigger the die, the higher the price.
  • Dribble - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

Same die size as GTX 260 was a few years ago which I bought new for less that $200. You can bet nvidia make a lot of money on each 780 sold.
  • ShieTar - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

The GTX 260 was released with a 400$ MSRP, and the GTX 280 came with the same die-size and an 650$ MSRP.

The fact that you managed to buy a card below MSRP a while after the launch does not dictate that nVidia should now lower their release prices. When your operating income is at 15% of your revenue, and you are in such a risky business as nVidia is, cutting prices in half is not exactly a reasonable plan.
  • Skiddywinks - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

The pricing on cards (at least higher end) in general is silly, period. I don't know how much of it is honest to God BoM etc, and how much is profit maximisation, but I remember when I bought the 4870X2 for £330 about a month or two after release. Today's equivalent is £600+. Hell, I can't even get the best single GPU card for £300 any more (GTX 285 around the time was like £200).
  • Homeles - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

If you're concerned about price, you shouldn't even be looking at the 780. Also, the market determines the price, not Nvidia.
  • RaistlinZ - Monday, October 7, 2013 - link

I don't know why people are expecting AMD to price the 290X lower than the 780, even though it will perform closer to a Titan.

Replied to the wrong person, sorry.
  • Wreckage - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

So their "new" top of the line card may perform as well as NVIDIA's old card? I miss the days of new chips actually being faster by a lot.
  • thevoiceofreason - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

So it looks like AMD does not have a response for GTX660 at $170/180. The gap between R260X and 270X is pretty big (in terms of price, shader count and TDP at least). Can we expect a die shrink of the new architecture to fill the void?
  • ShieTar - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

I boldly predict that there will be a R270 (no X), which will be more in line with the performance of the 660.

7870s are constantly on sale. Just saw this one today...

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

Granted the $150 is AR, but it seems like a reasonable alternative to me, and you get 2 free games. Or $180 AR for a 7950 with 3 free games...

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

I can't believe how cheap good cards are right now from both AMD and Nivida. If you are only talking about 1080p, you've got a bunch of good options at some of the best prices in recent memory.
  • Hrel - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

Yeah, prices are finally getting nearly as competitive as they were during the GTX4 series days. I remember picking up a GTX460 for $120. Granted they come with more GDDR now, so some small increase is to be expected. But the GTX660 needs to drop to $150 retail so on sale prices can be competitive with what the GTX X60 class cards should sell for. Currently AMD is the only one competing offering the HD7870 for $150 (faster than the GTX660) and the HD7950 for $180. (WAY faster than the GTX660.)
  • Hrel - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

They have the HD7870 at $150 and the HD7950 at $180. Both cards are faster than the GTX660, just by different amounts. Link in my other comment.
  • tipoo - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

"The GTX 760 and GTX 770 are not getting price cuts and will remain at $249 and $399 "

That's interesting, since todays card reviews seem to show AMD stealing their lunch for 100 less. Odd.
  • Hrel - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

RIGHT?! I honestly don't know what Nvidia is thinking. They're not an extra 10 or 20 bucks for a given performance class, they're an extra 100 or more for the same class card. They aren't even an option currently. That's WITHOUT giving any value to AMD's game voucher program which you just can't do. That program is excellent and for the first time EVER adds actual REAL value to the cards.
  • Fanatical Meat - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

Hey I don't care what AMD/Nvidia's margins are. I want a decent video card that costs around $200 without making a ton of sacrifices. I too have a GTX260 its aged real well and I think I paid slightly more that $200 (For some reason $230 is in my head)
  • thesavvymage - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

You can easily find a 7950 for around 200 or a 7870 for 170ish. They are very capable cards, no sacrifices at that price point
  • Hrel - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

That's too bad, since the 760 needs AT LEAST a $30 price cut and the 770 needs a $100 price cut or more. Couldn't possibly care any less about he 780, but Nvidia is essentially saying "if you want this card fuck you!"
  • Hrel - Tuesday, October 8, 2013 - link

    http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemail/Oct-0-2013/48...

That seems relevant here. Newegg has some VERY good prices on the HD7950, 7870 and 7850.

The 7870 beats the CRAP out of the 650Ti and it's at 150. Hell it beats the GTX660 and it's at 150.

The 7950 is at 180 and mostly beats the GTX760, if I remember correctly. So, you save 70 bucks.

Idk what Nvidia thinks they're doing; but I can't remember the last time they were price competitive with AMD.
  • SkyBill40 - Friday, October 11, 2013 - link

It would be sensible to have a cut on the 660Ti line as well seeing as I'd like to pick up another one for SLI and doing so on the cheap (as opposed to the $300 I paid for the first one) would sure be nice.
