I wonder why LG has kept The IPS display while all are moving towards AMOLED displays for smartphones and LG been the number 1 for marketing the OLED tech display. I myself find it appalling.
  • Meteor2 - Sunday, February 21, 2016 - link

Why is it appalling? I've always found that LCDs look better.
  • Metroid - Sunday, February 21, 2016 - link

I guess the timing, unless they want to clear out the stock for OLED display.
  • Vandam500 - Sunday, February 21, 2016 - link

AMOLED and OLED look way better than LCDs.
  • Lolimaster - Sunday, February 21, 2016 - link

    To be correct:

A properly calibrated not the "torch mode colors for the lulz IT HAS TO BE VIVID" amoled/oled destroys and sodomize any LCD.
  • Lolimaster - Sunday, February 21, 2016 - link

Color fidelity and contrast is totally unmatched.

I haven't really looked into amoled in a while. I know a couple years back they were WAY behind IPS, and that the main area they were looking to move amoled into was curved screens (stuff like having a wristband or forearm band display, you know silly movie stuff). It's good to hear that they've moved the tech forward enough to make it better than IPS.

Because you still haven't successfully petitioned web content creators and app designers to use black backgrounds? Otherwise AMOLED battery life is somewhat poor.

Plus, every AMOLED device I've ever owned has suffered visible burn after a year or so's use. Maybe the current generation devices are better. And maybe they'd be better if manufacturers stopped shrinking pixel size to satisfy some non-existent desire to have a flat battery.

I do feel that IPS actually display colours that are more realistic, but of course is subjected to proper factory calibration. Based on my experience with OLED, they seem to display colours that are over saturated, i.e. reds can appear too vibrant.

    Ugly design! =(
  • Kutark - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

I agree, the G3/G4 were fantastic designs. This looks slightly, I don't know, cheap? Low build quality? Even though its probably amazing build quality, design matters. I just, I keep feeling like im looking at a larger version of a phone from 2011.
  • MonkeyPaw - Sunday, February 21, 2016 - link

"The unibody design (almost unibody) of the G5 is what will be most noticed and praised as the G5's build quality rises dramatically in comparison to its predecessors."

I don't get this. The G4 has great build quality and in-hand feel. It's grippy and solid. Oh that's right, if a phone isn't made entirely of metal, it must be dramatically lower in quality.
  • qlum - Sunday, February 21, 2016 - link

While I have never held a g4 on the samsung side Ifound the swich with the note5 a noticeable regression from the note 3 in terms of grip and comfort to only bring a marginal improvement in the arguably less important looks department.

I'm fed up with phone manufacturers now. Metal just means it's heavier, unpleasantly cold/hot when uncased and easier to damage when dropped. Which works out well for them, because they make more money out of chumps dropping their phones. Sigh. I'll never have a phone that is objectively better in every way than my old G2 :(
  • Kutark - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

I have a g3,u friend has a g2, and outside of overall size it's a better ohione in every way. Particularly the image quality out the screen is hugely better

Is unlimited HEVC encoding with both IOS and HDR at 2160p60 supported? Thanks a lot.

"It remains to be seen how the Snapdragon 820 and the screeen efficiency end up..." Must be real impressive if you have to call it a "screeen" :)

"At first I was surprised to find no power button on the phone but after closer look it's revealed that the fingerprint sensor now acts as a mechanical button, a pretty interesting and ergonomic combination of both features."

Wait a minute, so if I want to wake up the phone that is resting on a table I have to pick it up first? That would be pretty lame.
  • cyberfrost - Monday, February 22, 2016 - link

You can double tap on screen or tap knock code to wake up phone.
  • shadarlo - Monday, February 22, 2016 - link

Anyone that hasn't used a phone with screen tap / knock code doesn't know what they are missing. It literally is such an awesome implementation that I have a hard time buying any phone without it after owning the G2.

Screen Tap / Knock Code are the best feature I've seen in any smartphone I've ever used without even a close second coming to mind. Everything else is standard across the industry it seems... not sure why no one else is implementing the taps/knocks.
  • Alexvrb - Monday, February 22, 2016 - link

I thought it was commonplace to have tap to wake these days.

Anyway, I'm glad to see it retains the microSD and replaceable battery.

Do the 8MP wide-angle camera record video in 4K as well?

Every time I look at that camera I think that "Number 5 is alive"

I love that LG is stepping outside of the box to be a bit daring with features. Cheers to that LG! But I still think I like the grip on my LG V10 better. I don't like the all metal/glass bodies of Samsung or Apple and LG was always the perfect way to get away from those. I'm hoping the V10 remains a thing and continues to get the cool feature treatment along with the G series.

I don't get the fascination with metal. It seems a pretty stupid material to use to make phones, because it attenuates radio signals, and it makes phones heavier.

I am glad that LG has at least managed to maintain its differentiation in having a removable battery, and microSD (SD now less of a differentiator).

I really don't care about the design of phones, except for their dimensions and in-hand grip/feel. That said, the design appears rather uninspiring, which may affect sales.

The modular aspect seems gimmicky and essentially worthless. Modularity works when you have open standards and third party accessories, not when you have what will just be overpriced up-selling opportunities for the manufacturer.

It's a shame that the battery size has come down to 2,800mAh, because, subject to benchmarking, it seems very likely that a significantly larger one (e.g. 3500mAh) would be beneficial. It seems as though an excessive focus on thinness is to blame, as usual.
Battery cases can be a nice option, but they tend to affect the ergonomics of a phone more than having a design that already incorporates a large battery.

The screen size versus overrall phone dimensions appears to be a regression compared with the G3 and, especially, the G2. Perhaps thinness and the metal design are again to blame.
  • Klug4Pres - Tuesday, February 23, 2016 - link

Oh, and at this point I think AMOLED would be a better choice of screen technology.
  • Kutark - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

I kept reading rumors they were going to put a 4k screen in the G5, I'm EXTREMELY glad they didn't. It would have been an utter and complete waste and only would have negatively impacted the phone's performance.
  • watzupken - Wednesday, February 24, 2016 - link

I think LG did a great job designing a phone that still caters to SD card and removeable battery, despite the metal chassis. Unfortunately, the styling of the phone seems to have taken a step backwards. If I compare this with say a cheaper Xiaomi Mi5, the Mi5 appears to be much better looking.

Any idea when the review embargo is lifted on this phone? LG have really stuffed up, announcing it just prior to the S7, then remaining quiet from then on. At least with the S7, you could pre-order and get a bonus, there was a tear-down, early delivery, first with full reviews. I've almost forgotten about the G5....
